- How does The International Learner help me to decide if an international degree program is right for me?
Working together, through a process that includes a self survey, guided research, and conversations focusing on the attributes you seek from a country, campus and the learning environment – Andrea helps you to identify the international university(ies) that best meets your needs and goals.
- When is the best time to begin the application process for international universities?
High school students who aspire to study abroad for an undergraduate degree should plan to start the reflection and self-assessment phase no later than spring of 11th grade. Essays can be written and perfected over the summer between 11th and 12th grade. Many international application portals open between September and October. Fall of Senior Year is the best time to apply.
College graduates considering post-graduate degrees abroad should begin their self-reflection and research phase approximately 12-18 months in advance of program start dates. This provides time to contact faculty, take the necessary entrance exams, determine the best fit programs, and apply to one of the limited seats per program.
- How does the application process work if I choose to apply to multiple university programs abroad?
Each country is different when it comes to the university application process but Andrea and The International Learner will help you select the best process for your needs – either submitting individual applications directly to each university or through a larger application portal. We will help to organize your deadline schedule, identify the steps involved with each application, and ensure that all contributors understand their roles.
In addition to institutional applications, many countries including the United Kingdom and Netherlands have a national application platform. Other countries, such as Ireland and Canada may have regional or subject based application portals. Depending on the international universities you select, it may even be possible to apply through the Common Application.
- Will I be required to take any entrance exams? What kind of standardized tests are required?
For the majority of undergraduate programs, international universities will request ACT or SAT test scores from applicants who graduate from US high schools. In addition, AP and IB scores are also requested when available along with the high school transcript. Students applying to creative or performing arts programs will be expected to submit a portfolio along with the standard materials for application.
For graduate programs the process varies depending on degree and level of post-graduate study by institution and faculty.
- I don’t speak a language other than English, are there programs available for international students that do not require fluency in the local language?
Native English speakers are able to access national education systems in English speaking countries from Canada, to Australia, Singapore, or South Africa. In addition, English language based degree programs are offered in many other destinations such as Spain, Germany, China, Korea, or the Netherlands.
- Are there scholarships available to help support my financial needs to study overseas?
The average cost of tuition and fees at public universities outside the United States is lower, however fewer scholarship opportunities exist especially at the undergraduate level. Private scholarships are available for international degree programs. Depending on the field, there may be scholarships and research funding available for graduate study. In either case, budgeting and financial planning well in advance can ensure that students and families can afford a degree abroad.
- Can I work while I pursue a degree outside of the United States?
The regulations for international student work authorization varies by country, but many governments do permit enrolled students to work part time while others offer time for paid practical experience.
- If I am accepted to an international university, how can The International Learner help with the visa and entry process?
While our focus is to support students to find the right fit and secure admission to their university of choice, we can also provide advice and connection to the right resources and experts to ensure that all aspects of the transition to international learning are successful including cross cultural training, housing applications, advice for visa applications, banking and medical support.
